چکیده

The effect of arsenate (As 5+ ) on growth and chlorophyll a production in Chlorella vulgaris, its removal by C. vulgaris and the role of glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PCs) were investigated. C. vulgaris was tolerant to As 5+ at up to 200 mg/L and was capable of consistently removing around 70% of the As 5+ present in growth media over a wide range of exposure concentrations. Spectral analysis revealed that PCs and their arsenic-combined complexes were absent indicating that the high bioaccumulation and tolerance to arsenic observed was not due to intracellular chelation. In contrast, GSH was found in all samples ranging from 0.8 mg/L in the control to 6.5mg/L in media containing 200 mg/L As 5+ suggesting that GSH plays a more prominent role in the detoxification of As 5+ in C. vulgaris than PC. At concentrations below 100 mg/L cell surface binding and other mechanisms may play the primary role in As 5+ detoxification, whereas above this concentration As 5+ begins to accumulate inside the algal cells and activates a number of intracellular cell defence mechanisms, such as increased production of GSH. The overall findings complement field studies which suggest C.vulgaris as an increasingly promising low cost As phytoremediation method for developing countries.

The effect of Melatonin pretreatment on growth responses and enhancement of the enzyme's antioxidant system in Chlorella vulgaris under stress of ionizing radiation

Melatonin has important roles in many growth and stress-related responsive processes in plants and algae. In this study, the mediating role of 100 and 500 µM melatonin on photosynthetic pigments and non-enzymatic antioxidant responses of microalga, Chlorella vulgaris to gamma irradiation stress has been studied. The result showed that the alga treated with 100 µM had a stable amount of chloroph...

Suppression of Chlorella vulgaris Growth by Cadmium, Lead, and Copper Stress and Its Restoration by Endogenous Brassinolide

Brassinosteroids play a significant role in the amelioration of various abiotic and biotic stresses. In order to elaborate their roles in plants subjected to heavy metals stress, Chlorella vulgaris cultures treated with 10(-8) M brassinolide (BL) were exposed to 10(-6)-10(-4) M heavy metals (cadmium, lead and copper) application. Under heavy metals stress, the growth and chemical composition (c...

The potential of crude oil pollutant reduction by green alga Chlorella vulgaris and evaluation of the induced physiological responses

In recent years, one of the most major world concerns is environmental pollutants derived from industrial and social performances. Unfortunately, in oil productive countries such as Iran, the substance is one of the most principle environmental pollutants. In this study, the effect of crude oil on some of physiological responses of unicellular alga Chlorella vulgaris such as the rate of photosy...

Predictive modeling of biomass production by Chlorella vulgaris in a draft-tube airlift photobioreactor

The objective of this study was to investigate the growth rate of Chlorella vulgaris for CO2 biofixation and biomass production. Six mathematical growth models (Logistic, Gompertz, modified Gompertz, Baranyi, Morgan and Richards) were used to evaluate the biomass productivity in continuous processes and to predict the following parameters of cell growth: lag phase duration (λ), maximum specific...

Gene expression changes of collagen І and ІІІ in human skin fibroblast cells in effect of microalga Chlorella vulgaris extract and compared to vitamin C

Skin aging is a biological process that is due to the reduction of collagen production and increase of multiple enzymes, including matrix metalloproteinase (MMPS), which degrade collagen. Chlorella vulgaris is a marine microalga and its beneficial effects on the skin make it a proper ingredient to be used in anti-aging products. In this study, the effect of C. vulgaris extract comparing to vita...
